Course Overview
ICD-11 Foundation Course is a comprehensive, video-based course designed to help learners understand how ICD-11 works as a modern disease classification system and how to apply it confidently in clinical coding practice. This course covers the structure, coding system, clinical concepts, tools, and documentation guidelines that coding professionals need as the global transition to ICD-11 accelerates.
The course is ideal for clinical coders, healthcare professionals, and health informatics learners who want to build ICD-11 expertise from the ground up — from how the system is designed to how it is coded, validated, and applied in real clinical scenarios.
Who This Course Is For
- Clinical and medical coders transitioning from ICD-10
- Healthcare documentation specialists and CDI professionals
- Health informatics and EHR professionals working with ICD-11
- Life science graduates and allied health professionals entering coding roles
- Coding quality leads and audit professionals
- Healthcare IT teams implementing ICD-11 in digital systems
Basic understanding of clinical coding is recommended. No prior ICD-11 knowledge required.
What You’ll Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the purpose, history, and global adoption of ICD-11
- Describe the Foundation Layer, MMS Linearization, and the 26-chapter structure
- Decode and construct ICD-11 alphanumeric stem codes
- Build post-coordinated expressions using severity, laterality, temporality, and causality extensions
- Apply combination coding rules for multi-diagnosis clinical scenarios
- Identify major changes to the Mental & Behavioural Disorders chapter (Chapter 6)
- Code injuries using the dual-axis framework (Chapter 22 + Chapter 23)
- Use the ICD-11 Browser, Smart Coding Tool, and ICD-10 → ICD-11 mapping tables
- Apply the 5 coding principles and avoid the 8 most common ICD-11 coding errors
- Complete real-world multi-diagnosis case studies with full coding rationale
Course Curriculum
Module 1: Introduction to ICD-11
- History and evolution of ICD — from origins to ICD-11 (effective January 2022)
- Why ICD-11? Key improvements over ICD-10 in structure, specificity, and digital design
- WHO’s role, global adoption timeline, and ICD-11 in health information systems
Module 2: ICD-11 Architecture & Structure
- Foundation Layer vs MMS Linearization — master ontology vs operational coding subset
- The 26-chapter structure — body system chapters, Chapter 25 (COVID-19), Chapter 26 (Traditional Medicine)
- The ICD-11 ontology model — entities, parent-child hierarchies, synonyms, and cross-references
Module 3: The ICD-11 Coding System
- Stem code structure — alphanumeric format, hierarchical design, always valid alone
- Post-coordination — building coded expressions using severity, laterality, temporality, and causality extensions
- Combination coding, residual categories (Y/Z), and extension code (X-code) rules
Module 4: Clinical Concepts & Diagnosis
- ICD-11 disease entities — diagnostic requirements, inclusions, exclusions, and cross-references
- Clinical modifiers in practice — severity, laterality, and temporality with documentation requirements
- Chapter 6 changes — personality disorders, PTSD/C-PTSD, Gaming Disorder, and terminology updates
- Injury coding — dual-axis rule using Chapter 22 (injury) and Chapter 23 (external cause)
Module 5: ICD-11 Tools & Implementation
- ICD-11 Browser (icd.who.int) and Smart Coding Tool — navigation, search, and validation
- ICD-10 → ICD-11 mapping — four mapping types and what each requires during migration
- The 5-phase organizational migration roadmap — from readiness assessment to full go-live
Module 6: Coding Guidelines, Documentation & Compliance
- The 5 universal ICD-11 coding principles applied to clinical scenarios
- The 8 most common ICD-11 coding errors and how to correct each
- Compliance and audit implications — financial, quality metrics, and regulatory risk
- Case Study 1 and Case Study 2 — full multi-diagnosis coding exercises with worked solutions
- Course Assessment — 18 questions across all modules (pass mark: 75%)
Tools & Standards Covered
- ICD-11 (WHO, 2022) — MMS Linearization
- ICD-11 Browser and Smart Coding Tool
- ICD-10 / ICD-10-CM (comparison and mapping)
